InStreams Hub - Research community for inorganic circular economy at the University of Oulu

Read about combining experimental and computational physics to help solve global problems

A lone scientist who is laboring day and night in the laboratory to find fundamental laws of nature is long gone and in the modern world, it is all about optimizing, collaborating, and embracing new developments and technologies into research. These innovations include instrument development, for example attosecond laser technology, which was the topic of this year’s Nobel prize in physics, but also advances in computer-based modeling, such as machine learning algorithms, artificial intelligence tools, and atomistic modeling of large and complex systems. Often these developments go hand-in-hand: for example, experimental breakthroughs in solid state physics and nanolithography allow production of even smaller computer chips, which in turn enable larger computing power.

Thesis Talks: Ronja Suvela

At the 3rd of November, Ronja Suvela defended her thesis titled "Sustainable mining in the Arctic environment : development of analytical methods for the determination of xanthates and application of the methods to environmental and process water samples". Recent highlights

In October, OULU letters made from geopolymer utilising industrial side stream were revealed at Hupisaaret. These letters were made possible by the work of our researchers at the University of Oulu.

10 years of research on ladle slag in the Fibre and Particle Engineering research unit at the hard core of the InStreams Hub is leading to industrial applications: Saint-Gobain Finland is planning on investing for a ladle slag grinding plant with a production capacity of 100 000 tons a year in Raahe.

In November, our research on CO₂ sequestering concrete became front page news in Kaleva.

What is the InStreams Hub?

InStreams Hub is a cross disciplinary hub at the University of Oulu for solving sustainability challenges related to inorganic materials. It focuses on cross-disciplinary inorganic materials research and engineering and the management and utilization of inorganic side streams. It develops sustainable value chains and has high interes to put scientific research into practice. The hub also provides research-based information to support decision-making and participates in public debate. The activities create conditions and models for a continuous cross-border and inter-sectoral cooperation, between companies and research institutes.
